Norovirus Outbreak on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship
A concerning situation has developed on the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship, Serenade of the Seas, where nearly 100 passengers and crew members have reported illness linked to a norovirus outbreak. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted that the total of affected individuals includes over 90 guests and four crew members. Symptoms primarily involve diarrhea and vomiting.
Royal Caribbean first notified the CDC about the outbreak on September 8. While many have become ill during the voyage, it does not mean all were affected at the same time.
In light of the outbreak, the cruise line has intensified its cleaning protocols and has consulted with the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program. Passengers who become ill are advised to seek assistance from the ship’s medical center for proper care and guidance.
The Serenade of the Seas began its journey in San Diego on September 19 and is set to reach Miami by October 2. The CDC encourages passengers to maintain good hygiene by washing hands regularly, staying hydrated, and getting plenty of rest during the cruise.
So far this year, the CDC has recorded 19 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships, most of which were attributed to norovirus. Health and safety remain the top priority for cruise lines, highlighting the importance of rigorous health measures to protect both guests and crew.
