Nine Inmates Escape from New Orleans Jail
In a startling incident, nine inmates, including some accused of murder, have escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans.
Sheriff Susan Hutson reported during a press conference on Friday, May 16, that the escape occurred around 1 a.m. "It’s almost impossible for people to get out of this facility without some kind of security lapse," she stated, emphasizing the need for an investigation into how this happened.
Hutson explained that the inmates managed to escape due to faulty locks on their cells and made a breach in a wall behind a toilet. Security footage shows them leaving through a supply door, climbing a wall, and running across a highway. There are indications that these inmates might have received help from individuals within the jail.
The escape was discovered during a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m. that morning. Photos released by the sheriff’s office revealed a large hole cut behind a toilet, with messages like "We Innocent" and "Too Easy LOL" written above it.
One of the escapees, Kendell Myles, has been recaptured and is now facing an additional charge of simple escape. He was found hiding under a car at a local hotel. The remaining escapees include Antoine Massey, Lenton Vanburen, Leo Tate, Derrick Groves, Jermaine Donald, Corey Boyd, Gary Price, Robert Moody, and Dkenan Dennis. Notably, Boyd, Donald, and Groves are already facing murder charges.
Sheriff Hutson mentioned that the investigation is ongoing to get to the bottom of the security failures and ensure the safety of the facility. The jail has since been put on lockdown as authorities continue their search for the remaining inmates.
