Nick Reiner, who is accused of killing his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, is no longer under suicide watch. He is being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
When Nick first arrived at the jail on December 15, he was immediately placed under close watch because of concerns about his well-being.
Now, the 32-year-old is in a solitary cell. He wears a yellow shirt and blue pants, which are standard jail clothes. He is no longer required to wear a special smock to prevent suicide.
According to a source, Nick will stay in this special housing unit unless a judge orders otherwise. He will continue to be watched closely and kept alone.
Nick is charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his parents. The prosecutor says he used a knife in the killings. Rob Reiner, 78, was a director, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, was a photographer. They were found dead in their home in Los Angeles on December 14.
Reports say that the couple’s daughter, Romy, found her father after a massage therapist couldn’t get into the house.
In the past, police had been called to the Reiners’ home for welfare checks. In 2019, they responded to calls about Nick, once for a welfare check and another time for a mental health issue.
Before his parents’ deaths, Nick was reportedly being treated for schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that can be treated.
The coroner’s office has confirmed that Rob and Michele Reiner died from multiple injuries caused by a sharp object.
After their deaths were ruled a homicide, their bodies were returned to the family on December 19.
Another source says that Nick can only talk to his lawyer and jail staff. He can only leave his cell for court or medical reasons. A police officer always escorts him, and a video camera records his movements.
The police source said these measures are in place to prevent anyone from interfering with the case or asking Nick questions about why he killed his parents.
Nick eats all his meals alone in his cell. Doctors have said that he has a mental disability.
According to the sheriff’s source, Nick is still being watched closely and is considered to have mental health issues. He eats and sleeps alone in his cell and hasn’t had any major problems.
On December 17, Nick appeared in court wearing an anti-suicide smock and shackles. His lawyer did not enter a plea on his behalf.
When the judge asked if he agreed to delay the hearing, Nick said, “Yes, your honor.”
The district attorney is seeking a murder conviction with “special circumstances,” which could mean Nick faces the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
In a 2016 interview, Nick spoke about his past struggles with drug addiction and homelessness. He said that his experiences inspired the film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote.
He said that he had been home for a while and was adjusting to being back in Los Angeles with his family.
His next court date is scheduled for January 7, 2026.
