A mother and her child experienced a frightening encounter with a cassowary, a large and potentially dangerous bird, in Australia. The close call was captured on security cameras and has since reminded the public of the risks associated with these creatures.
The Queensland Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science, and Innovation released the footage about a month after the incident, which took place on May 9 in Mission Beach. According to the department, cassowaries are known as one of the “world’s most dangerous birds.” They should not be fed or approached, as their behavior can become aggressive when they associate humans with food.
In the footage, the mother and her child approached a door when they spotted two cassowaries nearby. The child started to run, prompting the mother to hold the door open. The birds followed closely but did not manage to get inside. Once the door was shut, the cassowaries lingered nearby but did not try to get in.
The Queensland department identified the birds in the video as a male cassowary and its chick. They were likely looking for food due to previous interactions with people, which is why authorities are emphasizing the importance of not feeding wildlife.
Cassowaries are native to the wet tropical regions of Queensland and can be quite formidable. They are capable of inflicting serious injuries with their sharp claws, which is why they have drawn comparisons to fictional horror villains.
Wildlife rangers noted that feeding birds like the cassowary can change their behavior, making them more bold around people, which can lead to dangerous encounters. For example, in another incident, a cassowary attacked a man in his seventies, resulting in a leg injury.
Officials have been actively warning the public about these risks and are encouraging residents to avoid unlawful feeding. They stress the importance of keeping a safe distance from these birds, especially when chicks are present, as male cassowaries tend to be protective.
The advice for those living in areas with cassowaries includes driving carefully, avoiding stopping to observe the birds, and ensuring dogs are leashed or contained to prevent any confrontations.
