Late-Night Hosts React to Kimmel Suspension
Several late-night television hosts have responded to ABC’s decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel. The suspension came after comments Kimmel made regarding the tragic death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Jon Stewart used satire to address the situation. He created a parody of what he sees as the current political climate. Stephen Colbert expressed concern, calling the suspension censorship. Jimmy Fallon offered support to Kimmel, saying he hopes he comes back to television soon.
Stewart’s show featured a voice-over promising adherence to a supposed party line. He made light of criticisms of large cities. He made reference to the National Guard being deployed to combat crime. The set of “The Daily Show” was decorated with gold engravings, in a style reminiscent of some of President Trump’s personal preferences.
Colbert’s response was more direct. He critiqued the idea that the suspension would appease those calling for it.
Fallon stated that he does not know the full story behind Kimmel’s suspension. He said he considers Kimmel a good person and hopes he returns.
ABC suspended Kimmel’s show after some stations refused to air it. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also expressed concern about misinformation.
CBS previously announced it would end “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” This announcement came after Colbert criticized a settlement between President Trump and CBS’s parent company.
Former “Late Show” host David Letterman voiced his disapproval of the network’s actions. He stated that people should not be fired for disagreeing with leadership.
