In a recent podcast appearance, actress Kat Dennings shared insights about her experiences on the new sitcom, Shifting Gears, in which she stars alongside Tim Allen. During the discussion on the Not Gonna Lie podcast, Dennings revealed how both she and Allen felt emotional during a significant scene they filmed together.
“We were both a bit anxious about it,” Dennings explained. “The thought of crying on cue was daunting for us. But when I looked at Tim, it just happened; we both started crying, and it was genuine.” She noted that their emotional connection added depth to the first episode of the show.
Dennings, known for her role in 2 Broke Girls, highlighted that filming this sitcom is a unique experience as it addresses themes of grief and family issues. “It feels a bit surreal to be vulnerable in front of an audience, but when I focus on Tim’s energy, it all clicks into place,” she said, praising Allen for his ability to stay present and connected during their performances.
The show revolves around Matt, played by Allen, a widowed car restoration shop owner facing challenges as he adjusts to his estranged daughter, Riley (played by Dennings), and her children moving back in with him. Dennings described working with Allen and the child actors as “incredible.” She expressed that every cast member contributes to the humor and genuine moments in the series.
This role is particularly special for Dennings as it marks her first time playing a mother. “At 38, I thought I might never get the chance to take on a motherly role,” she admitted. “I have a lot of kids in my life; I’m a stepmother and a godmother, so I was excited to explore that part of myself that I haven’t showcased on screen before.”
Dennings acknowledged the opportunity to work with Tim Allen is something she deeply values. “He’s a television icon. I couldn’t let this chance slip away,” she remarked. Her admiration for Allen was evident when she called him her favorite TV dad, noting the longstanding support he’s received from his crew throughout his career.
The chemistry between Dennings and Allen shines through in their comedic banter, especially during their playful arguments on camera. Shifting Gears airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
