Wisconsin Judge Resigns After Helping Illegal Immigrant
Milwaukee, WI – Wisconsin Judge Hannah Dugan has resigned after being found guilty of obstructing federal officers. Her crime was helping an illegal immigrant avoid arrest.
Dugan sent her resignation to the governor on Saturday. Republicans in the state had been discussing impeachment since her conviction in December.
In her resignation letter, Dugan stated that she had always treated people with respect and fairness in her courtroom. However, she acknowledged that her case had become a major distraction.
Federal prosecutors said that last April, Dugan interfered with officers who were trying to arrest a Mexican man outside her courtroom. She is said to have led him out a back door. A jury found her guilty of obstruction. The man has since been deported.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said Dugan made the right choice by resigning. He pointed to the Wisconsin Constitution as the reason.
Dugan claimed her actions were to protect the independence of the courts. But critics say she overstepped her authority by interfering with federal law enforcement. They believe her actions undermined the rule of law.
