WASHINGTON – After a period of limited activity in the House of Representatives, Speaker Mike Johnson is calling members back to Washington to address important issues.
Representatives are returning to the Capitol after a break. They will immediately focus on voting to keep the government open and running.
Following efforts to release some documents and the arrival of Arizona’s newly elected Representative Adelita Grijalva, Speaker Johnson faces a test of his leadership as the House resumes its work.
During the break, Speaker Johnson has emphasized that House Republicans have already taken action by passing a funding bill. He stated that it was then up to the Senate to act.
Speaker Johnson defended his strategy, saying that representatives were able to connect with the people they represent and address their needs during the break.
As the House gets back to work, lawmakers will consider a bill to keep the government funded. The bill will fund many government operations through January 30, while some programs, like those for agriculture and veterans, will be funded through September.
With a narrow majority in the House, Speaker Johnson will need to gain support from Republicans to pass the bill.
