Italian Swimmers Detained for Shoplifting in Singapore
ROME – Two Italian swimmers found themselves in a troubling situation while returning home from the world championships in Singapore. Benedetta Pilato and Chiara Tarantino were briefly detained by airport authorities for shoplifting.
Pilato, who recently earned a bronze medal in the 50-meter breaststroke, and her teammate Tarantino were released after intervention from the Italian embassy, according to a statement from the Italian swimming federation.
The federation expressed its disappointment regarding the incident but mentioned they would consider the matter carefully. Reports indicate that Tarantino had hidden stolen items in Pilato’s suitcase.
This incident took place after the world championships, which concluded on August 3, as the swimmers were returning from a vacation in Bali. Pilato shared her feelings on Instagram, stating, “I went through particularly difficult moments, which were beyond my control, but which seriously affected me.”
She emphasized her cooperation with local authorities throughout the ordeal, crediting her transparency for the quick resolution. Pilato, 20, is no stranger to success; she previously won a gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke at the 2022 championships and has multiple other medals to her name.
“I never intended to commit inappropriate gestures, and anyone who knows me understands my commitment to sport, fairness, and honesty,” Pilato added. She reflected on the experience, noting it taught her valuable lessons about personal responsibility.
Tarantino, 22, also has achievements in her swimming career, having won a bronze medal in the mixed 4×100 free relay at the 2021 European championships. She has yet to make an official comment on the incident.
This episode highlights the need for athletes to be mindful of their actions, especially when in foreign countries. It serves as a reminder of the importance of personal accountability and the values that sportsmanship represents.
