Behind the cheerful voice of Frosty: The Story of Jackie Vernon
Jackie Vernon, known to many as the voice of the beloved “Frosty the Snowman,” lived a life far more complex than the jolly character he portrayed. His son, David Vernon, recently shared some surprising details about his father’s life.
Vernon, who passed away in 1987 at the age of 63, apparently had a complicated personal history. Before settling down with his wife Hazel, with whom he had three children, he had been married multiple times and had other families. This revelation came as a shock to David, who learned about it when a woman and a young man appeared at their doorstep, seeking to speak with his father.
Beyond his family life, Vernon also faced personal struggles. According to his son, he battled depression and became dependent on tranquilizers during the later years of his career.
Despite these challenges, Vernon’s role as Frosty became a source of pride and joy for him, especially later in life. Initially, he didn’t take the role very seriously, but over time, he came to appreciate the happiness it brought to audiences.
David recalls how his father’s perspective changed. In his final Christmases, the family would watch “Frosty the Snowman” together, and Vernon would be filled with pride. He embraced the role, understanding that it was how many people would remember him. He enjoyed bringing joy to children by using his Frosty voice.
Even after his death, Vernon’s voice continues to bring smiles to people’s faces. David says that he often hears his father’s voice during the Christmas season when he passes by Frosty toys in stores. It is a reminder that, like Frosty, his father’s spirit returns every Christmas.
