A farmer from California is facing serious charges in Arizona. Michael Abatti, who is 63 years old, has been accused of shooting and killing his estranged wife, Kerri Ann Abatti, who was 59.
Michael was brought from California to Arizona to face the charges. He appeared in court and said he was not guilty of first-degree murder. Kerri Ann was found dead at a home in Pinetop, Arizona. She had moved there after she and Michael separated.
The police believe that Michael drove from El Centro, California, to Pinetop on November 20th. They say he killed Kerri Ann and then drove back to California right away.
Michael is currently in jail in Navajo County, and his bail is set at $5.5 million. His lawyers are worried about his health. They say that if he is released, he will continue to get medical treatment and follow all the rules set by the court.
One of his lawyers asked people to wait before making a judgment about the case. She said that Michael has always been a good person in the community and has helped many charities. She believes he deserves a fair trial, just like anyone else accused of a serious crime.
The police searched several places connected to the Abatti family in California. They found what they called “a lot of evidence,” which led to Michael’s arrest. The police have mentioned that the couple was going through a divorce, but they have not said exactly why they think Michael killed Kerri Ann.
The couple owned a farm called Abatti Farms in El Centro. According to news reports, Michael was surprised when Kerri Ann filed for divorce. He said that she left him while he was on a fishing trip. The next court date for the case is set for March 17th.
