U.S. Delegation Seeks Resolution in Ukraine Crisis
Moscow – In a move signaling continued efforts to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, an advisor, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other high-ranking Russian officials in Moscow. The meeting, held Tuesday morning, is the latest attempt to find a path towards ending the conflict.
The U.S. delegation’s visit comes after intensive negotiations in Florida with Ukrainian and American representatives, aimed at refining a proposed framework for peace. Kushner’s inclusion highlights the importance of experience in navigating complex international negotiations. His prior involvement in securing a ceasefire in Gaza demonstrates a capacity for finding common ground amidst challenging circumstances.
Earlier this year, in a speech, a high-ranking official pledged to deploy Witkoff and Kushner to address the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing their skills as negotiators to achieve a lasting and enforceable peace.
The meeting in Moscow saw President Putin accompanied by senior diplomat Yuri Ushakov and Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund. Following initial formalities, Dmitriev reportedly took Witkoff and Kushner on a walking tour of Moscow, with Witkoff commenting on the city’s beauty as they transitioned into formal discussions.
Before the meeting, Putin voiced concerns that Europe was unfairly favoring Ukraine and obstructing the peace process. He stated that demands from the continent were “absolutely unacceptable to Russia” but reiterated that Russia had no plans to attack other European nations.
“But if Europe suddenly wants to wage a war with us and starts it, we are ready right away,” Putin declared.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in Dublin, Ireland, continuing a series of meetings with European leaders. Just a day prior, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. Macron revealed that he, along with Zelensky, had spoken with Witkoff before the Moscow discussions to ensure coordination.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of the signals coming from the Moscow meeting, stating that future steps depend on these signals and could change rapidly. He expressed openness to meeting with American delegates, stressing the need for tangible results, given the ongoing loss of life. Zelensky also stated his willingness to meet with a respected U.S. leader, pending the outcome of the talks.
Zelensky reported that the Ukrainian delegation had finalized a revised 19-point peace plan, which was initially drafted last month. This framework, streamlined from a previous 28-point version, shifts the focus away from U.S. recognition of Russian control over certain Ukrainian territories, leaving these territorial issues for direct negotiation.
Zelensky stressed the importance of defining a clear end to the war and ensuring security guarantees for Ukraine to prevent future invasions.
However, voices are cautioning that significant work remains to be done. The meeting in Moscow occurred shortly after Russian forces claimed control of the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, a key logistical center. This development underscores the complexities and challenges in achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The situation remains fluid, and the outcome of these diplomatic efforts is still uncertain.
