In a fun milestone, the beloved movie Superbad is reaching its 18th anniversary this year. To celebrate, author Andrew Buss has released a new book titled I AM MCLOVIN: How Superbad Became the Biggest Comedy Hit of Its Generation. This book offers fans an inside look at the making of the classic 2007 comedy.
Buss dives into the story of how writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg started crafting the script when they were just 13. He details how they managed to film some of the more adult scenes and helped transform the cast, which included many unknown actors, into well-known stars. Notably, producer Judd Apatow shares his insights in the book, which combines fresh interviews and information from a previous oral history he was part of in 2022.
Superbad is a coming-of-age story about two best friends, played by Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, who are eager to attend a big party as they finish high school. The movie, distributed by Sony Pictures, quickly became a hit with millennials, earning over $33 million in its opening weekend.
An intriguing detail discussed in the book is how Emma Stone, who originally had blonde hair, was encouraged to dye it red for her role. This decision, though casual, ended up shaping her image significantly. Apatow recalled that when it came to casting Stone, someone suggested changing her hair color. He said, “Well, maybe it could be red or something?” After dyeing her hair, he joked, “I think she had never done it before… now people love her with red hair, and she’s had to live with that for a lot of her adult life.”
I AM MCLOVIN: How Superbad Became the Biggest Comedy Hit of Its Generation became available on February 18, giving fans a chance to dive deeper into the film’s legacy and the stories behind its success.
