Egypt Reassures on the Status of Saint Catherine Monastery
In a recent meeting, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelaaty assured his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis, that the famous Saint Catherine Monastery and its valuable archaeological sites will remain protected. This statement followed previous concerns raised by the Greek Orthodox Church regarding the land’s ownership.
An administrative court ruling stated that the Egyptian state owns the land but recognized the monks’ rights to continue using the site. The Patriarchate of Jerusalem expressed its worries, emphasizing the importance of maintaining Christian worship at this sacred site, which has served believers for 1,700 years. They welcomed Egypt’s commitment not to infringe on the monastery’s status.
Egypt’s presidency reiterated its dedication to preserving the religious significance of the monastery.
During their discussions, Gerapetritis stated that both nations aim to protect the monastery and clarify its legal framework. He highlighted the importance of honorably upholding the longstanding traditions surrounding this revered site for the Greek Orthodox community.
