Ocasio-Cortez Faces Backlash from Left for Iron Dome Vote
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party, is in hot water with some members of the far left after her recent vote on a defense bill concerning U.S. funding for Israel’s Iron Dome.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) criticized Ocasio-Cortez for not supporting an amendment proposed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, which aimed to cut $500 million in defense funding specifically meant to help Israel’s missile defense systems. The DSA argued that an arms embargo is necessary to prevent military support for any forces engaged in violence, and they expressed disappointment in Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to vote against the amendment.
Despite her stance, Ocasio-Cortez did oppose the larger defense funding bill, which the DSA claims is also a good move against what they term the “military-industrial complex.” However, they weren’t satisfied with her subsequent clarification on her position regarding the Iron Dome.
In their statement, the DSA pointed out, “The Iron Dome has enabled Israel to take military action against several countries.” They found her support for military aid contradictory, especially given her acknowledgment of the violence in Israel and Gaza.
In a response on social media after the vote, Ocasio-Cortez defended her choice, stating that Greene’s amendment would not stop offensive military aid to Israel and would instead harm defensive capabilities. She emphasized her commitment to reducing U.S. military support that contributes to ongoing conflicts.
This situation highlights the ongoing division within the Democratic Party regarding foreign policy, especially concerning Israel. Ocasio-Cortez has faced criticism before for not taking a strong enough stance on the issue. Back in 2021, she famously teared up on the House floor while voting on military funding for the Iron Dome.
Last week, defense funding legislation which included a hefty $832 billion budget for fiscal year 2026 passed, while Greene’s specific amendment faced an overwhelming defeat with a vote of 6-422.
As debates about military aid and foreign policy continue, it’s clear that tensions will persist within the Democratic Party, especially as more members voice their concerns about America’s global role.
