Denise Austin, the fitness expert known for encouraging Americans to stay active, proves that age is just a number. At 68, she’s still rocking the same workout clothes she wore decades ago.
Austin, who founded Fit Over 50 magazine, shares her secrets for lasting weight control through her fitness app. She emphasizes that her “then-and-now” photos are meant to inspire others, showing that consistent effort leads to real results.
“I’ve kept all my workout clothes from the ’80s and ’90s,” Austin said, noting her daughters also enjoy wearing them. “It shows that if you keep up with your workouts, you’ll feel good.”
Austin stresses that good health is priceless. She advises people to find ways to move throughout the day, highlighting that even standing burns more calories than sitting. “If you’re on your phone, walk and talk,” she suggests. “The more you move, the better your circulation, and that helps your whole body.”
For 24 years, Austin hosted a top-rated exercise show and has sold millions of workout videos. She personally works out for 30 minutes every morning, saying it gives her energy for the day.
Austin also incorporates small exercises throughout the day, like tightening stomach muscles while sitting or squeezing glutes while standing in line. “If you don’t squeeze it, no one else will,” she jokes.
Walking is Austin’s favorite exercise. “Walking works. It really shows results,” she says. She recommends starting with a 20-minute walk and gradually increasing to 30 minutes at least three times a week.
Austin emphasizes the importance of stretching and light weights to complement cardio. “Heart disease is the number one killer for women,” she notes, “and exercise is great for your heart.”
In addition to exercise, Austin promotes clean eating with fresh, whole foods. She prefers cooking at home but balances it with shared dishes when dining out. “Food is medicine,” she says, advising people to read labels and choose foods with recognizable ingredients. She includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, protein, and fiber in her diet.
Austin encourages everyone to start exercising, no matter their age. “Start small, but start now,” she advises. “Make a plan, whether it’s joining a program, going to the gym, or simply going for a walk.”
