New Video Reveals Traffic Stop of Idaho Murder Suspect
Recently released body camera footage shows Bryan Kohberger being questioned by the police during a traffic stop from August 2022, just three months before he was accused of fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students.
In the video, Kohberger, who was driving a white Hyundai Elantra, was stopped for driving 42 mph in a 35 mph zone in Moscow, Idaho. After admitting he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, Kohberger says, “I’m just being honest with you,” to which the officer responds with appreciation. He received a $10 citation for the seatbelt violation, but was only warned about speeding.
This incident marks one of the two times Kohberger was pulled over by law enforcement prior to the tragic murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin on November 13, 2022. Unlike Kohberger, two other roommates in the house survived the attack.
In a separate incident on October 14, 2022, Kohberger was again stopped near the Washington State University campus for allegedly running a red light, but he was let go.
The body camera footage was set to be presented at his trial before Kohberger accepted a plea deal on July 2, allowing him to avoid the death penalty by pleading guilty to the murders and one count of burglary. Prosecutors highlighted that he drove to and from the crime scene in the same white Hyundai Elantra.
On July 23, Kohberger was sentenced to four life sentences without parole and ordered to pay $270,000 in fines. During the sentencing, he showed little emotion while family and friends of the victims shared impassioned statements. The motive behind his actions remains unclear. Kohberger is currently undergoing a two-week evaluation by the Idaho Department of Corrections to determine his long-term prison placement.
