Boulder Police Charge Man in Hate Crime Attack
BOULDER, Colo. — A man has been charged with a federal hate crime after allegedly attacking a group in Boulder, Colorado, that was raising awareness for Israeli hostages in Gaza. The suspect, Mohammed Sabry Soliman, age 45, reportedly confessed that he had planned the attack for a year, targeting what he called a “Zionist group.”
The incident occurred as the group finished their weekly demonstration, resulting in injuries to eight individuals, some suffering burns. Witnesses claimed Soliman yelled “Free Palestine” during the attack. An FBI affidavit revealed that Soliman was apprehended shortly after the incident and expressed willingness to repeat the assault.
Details show that the attack unfolded at the busy Pearl Street pedestrian mall, coinciding with rising global tensions due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. This clash has led to an alarming rise in antisemitic incidents within the United States. Interestingly, the attack occurred on the first day of the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.
Eyewitnesses reported chaos as the attack began. Alex Osante, dining nearby, heard glass shatter and cries for help. Video captured the immediate aftermath, showing a woman who had caught fire as people attempted to douse the flames with water.
After the initial violence, Soliman briefly disappeared before reemerging to throw another incendiary device. He ended up injuring himself in the process and was later arrested without resistance. Authorities discovered more than a dozen unlit Molotov cocktails at the scene, along with materials linked to Soliman.
Investigators learned that Soliman had researched how to create these devices online. He indicated that he had delayed carrying out his plan until after his daughter graduated.
The group targeted in the attack aimed to shed light on the plight of Israeli hostages, and authorities believe Soliman acted alone. Described as a previously friendly neighbor, reports indicated that Soliman showed signs of distress long before the incident.
As the events unfolded, law enforcement responded aggressively, ensuring safety at religious sites following this attack, which they categorized as an act of terrorism. Officials emphasized the growing prevalence of such violent incidents, reflecting an unsettling trend that needs urgent attention.
This act of violence echoes another tragic shooting in Boulder from years past, further highlighting the persistent threat of extremism in various forms within American society. The community remains on alert as discussions about safety and tolerance continue following this distressing event.
