A 48-year-old woman from Louisiana, Danette Colbert, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Kansas City sports reporter Adan Manzano. Authorities stated that Colbert had an accomplice, Ricky White, who is also facing charges.
According to Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley, White, described as a transient, has been charged with simple robbery and various fraud offenses. The police believe that Colbert and White were “working hand in hand” during the incident.
White was apprehended in Hollywood, Florida, on Friday and is currently being held in Broward County.
Manzano’s death has been attributed to the combined toxic effects of Xanax and alcohol, alongside positional asphyxia, as confirmed by coroner Dr. Jerry Satanovich. Manzano was found face-down on a pillow, and his blood alcohol content was reported to be .232, nearly three times the legal limit. Despite the findings, Dr. Satanovich indicated that this does not rule out murder charges against Colbert.
Manzano was discovered in a hotel room in Kenner on February 5. Prior to the murder charge, Colbert was initially charged with fraud and theft after being caught using Manzano’s credit card and possessing his cell phone the day after his death. Surveillance footage showed her arriving at the hotel with Manzano and leaving alone shortly after.
Investigators also revealed that Manzano did not have a prescription for Xanax. Furthermore, during a search of Colbert’s home, authorities allegedly found a drug similar to Xanax, raising further concerns about her involvement.
Colbert has a history of legal troubles in New Orleans, with accusations of drugging men and stealing from them.
Manzano, who was a sideline reporter for the Chiefs TV crew and worked for Telemundo KC, was in Louisiana to cover the Super Bowl. He was also a devoted father to a young daughter. Telemundo KC expressed their deep sorrow over Manzano’s death, highlighting his talent and commitment to his work in the community.
