WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court has decided to allow California to use its new congressional map for upcoming elections. This decision rejects a plea from state Republicans and the previous administration who argued against the map.
The court made this decision without any dissenting opinions.
Republicans, along with the former administration, claimed that the California map unfairly used race as a factor in drawing district lines. A lower court, however, disagreed with this claim.
This decision means that the new districts, which could change the outcome in several seats currently held by Republicans, will be used in the next election. The fight over these district lines is important because it could affect which party controls Congress.
A lawyer for the state Republican Party stated that they will continue to fight against the map in future elections, arguing that it does not provide equal protection under the law for all California voters.
