Billy Joel Cancels Concerts Due to Health Issue
Billy Joel has announced the cancellation of all his upcoming concerts across North America and England after being diagnosed with a serious health condition. He is facing fluid buildup in his brain, which has affected his hearing, vision, and balance.
The music icon shared the news on social media, explaining that he has Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, a brain disorder that can impair various cognitive functions, including memory and concentration. His team noted that recent concert performances have made his condition worse, and Joel is now following his doctor’s advice to focus on recovery through specific physical therapy.
"I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding," Joel expressed in a statement.
Earlier this year, the 76-year-old singer underwent surgery and started physical therapy, with doctors initially optimistic about his recovery. However, it remains unclear if those earlier health concerns were linked to his current diagnosis.
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus can lead to difficulties in walking, bladder control, and cognitive issues if not treated. Although it’s a rare condition and often hard to diagnose, it can be successfully treated with surgery to drain excess fluid. Patients typically may also require physical therapy afterward.
Billy Joel recently wrapped up a successful residency at Madison Square Garden and had plans for performances at iconic venues like Yankee Stadium and Citi Field in New York, as well as MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Fans will be able to receive refunds for all canceled shows.
