The United States is facing a significant challenge regarding its copper supply. With the nation demanding more copper than can be produced domestically, the reliance on imports has become a pressing issue. Fortunately, Ivanhoe Electric is making strides to change this trend, aiming to become the first U.S.-based company to open a copper mine on American soil in over a decade. With copper prices skyrocketing to historic highs, the timing for this venture could not be better.
In a move to boost domestic copper production, the Trump administration has taken steps to recognize copper as a critical mineral. This designation, announced earlier this year, is expected to simplify the permitting process and provide tax benefits for miners. Additionally, a 50% tariff on imported copper will take effect soon, ensuring that there is a financial incentive for companies to mine copper at home.
As it stands, the United States only manages to produce about half of its copper needs, ranking fifth globally in production, behind countries like Chile and China. The lengthy permitting process—averaging 29 years—has significantly hindered the establishment of new mines. However, Ivanhoe Electric has broken ground on its Santa Cruz Project, located approximately 40 miles south of Phoenix, Arizona. This mine is on track to start production by 2028, a mere eight years after inception, which is remarkably fast in mining terms.
Taylor Melvin, CEO of Ivanhoe Electric, has expressed enthusiasm about this expedited timeline. He credits the project’s location on private land for allowing a more efficient permitting process. This streamlined approach positions the mine for quicker construction and production timelines.
Over the project’s 6,000 acres, the company has been actively surveying the land to determine the best mining locations. The mine is designed to be underground, and projections indicate it will yield nearly 3 billion pounds of copper over its operational life of 23 years. With such production capacity, Ivanhoe Electric aims to rank among the top five or six mines in the country.
One of the significant challenges facing U.S. copper producers is the limited number of smelters available for processing copper. As of now, only two smelters exist in the United States, necessitating that a lot of mined copper be sent abroad for processing. Ivanhoe Electric plans to utilize a method known as leaching, efficiently extracting copper based on the characteristics of the ore found at the Santa Cruz site. This innovation will allow for the production of pure copper ready for American consumers.
The overall demand for copper is expected to rise dramatically. Recent predictions by the International Energy Agency suggest that while global demand was around 26 million tons last year, it could soar to nearly 40 million tons by 2050. However, many existing mines will be depleted by that time, leading to a potential decline in production unless new operations are launched.
