Celebrating Mother’s Day with Musk Oxen in Alaska
PALMER, Alaska — This Mother’s Day, families in Alaska can create special memories at the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer. On Sunday, moms will receive a complimentary daisy and free admission, giving them a chance to connect with nature and see these fascinating creatures up close.
At this unique farm, located about an hour’s drive from Anchorage, visitors can observe around 75 musk oxen, including three adorable calves that are just starting to explore their surroundings. One popular resident, an older bull named Trebek—after the beloved game show host—has become a local favorite.
Mark Austin, the farm’s executive director, shares the excitement: “Who wouldn’t want to celebrate Mother’s Day with a musk ox mom and her charming calf?” The farm has welcomed visitors on Mother’s Day since 1986, marking it as the kick-off for the summer season.
The Musk Ox Farm, which has been operational since 1964, provides a fantastic opportunity for educational experiences. The location’s accessibility has allowed it to serve as a vital resource for residents and tourists alike.
Austin reflects on the tradition’s importance: “It’s a rite of passage for many people. If we ever decided not to host it, there would certainly be a reaction.” Last year, the farm attracted over 1,500 visitors, a testament to its popularity and the cherished memories families create there.
Musk oxen are remarkable animals that have thrived since the ice age, once sharing the landscape with saber-toothed tigers. They are known for their unique personalities—smart, curious, and affectionate. While males can weigh up to 800 pounds and stand about five feet tall, females are slightly smaller, making them impressive yet approachable creatures.
These animals were once widespread across northern Europe, Asia, and North America but faced near extinction by the 1920s. Conservation efforts began in 1934, leading to a recovery that now sees around 5,000 musk oxen across Alaska.
During this special event, the nonprofit farm encourages donations from visitors, allowing community members to contribute while enjoying a day of fun. Austin emphasizes the community spirit behind the event: “We’re grateful to give back to the community in this way.”
This Mother’s Day, families can enjoy a wonderful time at the Musk Ox Farm, celebrating nature, community, and the joy of motherhood.
