Aileen Wuornos was a woman who was found guilty of killing several men. Her story has been told in movies and documentaries.
Wuornos said she killed seven men in Florida between 1989 and 1990. She said she was working as a sex worker and killed the men because they attacked or tried to attack her.
Even though she said it was self-defense, Wuornos was found guilty of killing six of the men. She was sentenced to death for each of those killings. She was killed by lethal injection in 2002. Her case got a lot of attention because it’s rare for women to be serial killers.
Her life was turned into a movie called “Monster,” where Charlize Theron played Wuornos. Theron won an Oscar for her acting. There’s also a documentary on Netflix called “Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers” that looks at her crimes.
Wuornos had a difficult childhood. Her parents split up, and she said she was abused. She had a baby when she was 15 and gave the child up for adoption. She was arrested several times for things like drunk driving and theft. She also had mental health problems and tried to kill herself.
Wuornos’ first murder was in 1989. She was picked up by Richard Mallory, and she claimed he attacked her. She shot him and left his body in Volusia County, Florida.
After that, she killed six more men. Their bodies were found in different places. One man was never found, but Wuornos was linked to his disappearance.
Police caught Wuornos after finding her palm print in one of the victim’s cars. They made a deal with her partner, Tyria Moore, who got Wuornos to confess to the murders.
At her trial, Wuornos said she killed the men in self-defense. But the jury didn’t believe her, and she was found guilty.
While in prison, Wuornos changed her story several times. She said she killed the men because they attacked her, but she also said she killed them for money.
Before she was killed, Wuornos said she hated everyone and would kill again if she could. But in a documentary, she said she only said that because she wanted to die and was tired of being in prison.
Her last words were strange. She said she would be back with Jesus and a big spaceship, like in the movie “Independence Day.”
