Family of Missing Student Receives Arrest Update After 20 Years
Steven Cook, a 20-year-old student from England, disappeared during his first trip abroad without his parents in 2005. He was last seen on his first night in Malia, a popular coastal town in Crete, Greece.
Recently, police made an arrest related to Steven’s death, as confirmed by the BBC. This news came just after September 1, marking the 20th anniversary of his disappearance. Steven’s brother, Chris Cook, expressed mixed feelings about the development. He stated that while there may be some sense of justice, nothing can truly compensate for the family’s pain over the past two decades.
Steven traveled to Greece with friends, and on the night he vanished, they were enjoying their time at local bars. Witnesses reported him asking for directions back to his hotel before he went missing. Years later, in 2017, workers discovered his skeletal remains in a well while cleaning the site. Along with the remains, a disposable camera and a belt were found, although it remains uncertain if these items are linked to his death.
Authorities in both Cheshire and Crete are aware of new developments in the case, including the murder charge that has been filed. The case has been moved to the Heraklion Jury Trial court in Greece, with a hearing set for October 21.
The Cook family hopes to find closure as they navigate this unexpected turn of events after so many years.
