A 5-year-old girl in Washington, D.C., is currently in a serious condition after being accidentally shot by her 3-year-old brother with an unsecured gun. This unfortunate incident occurred on Monday, December 16, as confirmed by Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department during a press conference.
According to the details shared, the young girl was shot in the upper body while in the living room of their home. When officers arrived, they provided immediate assistance, but she was later taken to the hospital, where she is being treated for critical injuries.
An adult male, who was supposed to care for the children while their mother was out running errands, was there at the time of the incident. This man, identified as 59-year-old Darrell Graham, has been arrested and is facing charges of First Degree Cruelty to Children.
Following a search of the home, police discovered the weapon used in the shooting, which turned out to be a ghost gun—unserialized firearms that can be assembled from various parts, making them untraceable.
In connection with the case, 21-year-old D’Jaunae McCrory Jackson, believed to be the girl’s sister, has also been charged with multiple offenses, including First Degree Cruelty to Children and Criminally Negligent Storage of a Firearm.
The situation highlighted the significant risks associated with having unsecured firearms in homes, especially those with young children. Chief Smith emphasized the importance of firearm safety and urged the community to keep the injured girl in their thoughts and prayers.
