Dominican Republic is basking in national pride following Zoe Saldaña’s Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Emilia Pérez.” This achievement marks a significant milestone as Saldaña becomes the first Dominican to receive this prestigious award.
President Luis Abinader celebrated this historic win, taking to social media to express his gratitude to Saldaña for being an exceptional representative of Dominican culture. He praised her talent and dedication, stating, “You are a Dominican pride,” acknowledging the honor she has brought to the nation.
Culture Minister Roberto Ángel Salcedo, who has a background in film production, also shared his excitement, declaring Saldaña’s award as a well-deserved recognition of her work and international success. He enthusiastically voiced his pride, echoing sentiments of celebration throughout the nation.
Zoe Saldaña, who has Dominican roots, won the Oscar for her compelling portrayal of Mexican lawyer Rita Castro in the French narco-musical. This is a notable achievement that many are comparing to Amelia Vega’s victory in the Miss Universe pageant, which was also a groundbreaking moment for Dominican women.
34-year-old lawyer Scarlet Jiménez drew inspiration from the past, referencing how Vega’s win sparked feelings of pride among Dominicans. She said, “It feels amazing to see Dominicans shining everywhere, just as we did back then.”
The largest newspaper in the Dominican Republic, Diario Libre, dedicated an editorial to Saldaña, recognizing her as one of the most prominent figures in global cinema today.
In her acceptance speech, Saldaña paid tribute to her mother, who was present at the ceremony, and expressed her love for her grandmother, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1961. She highlighted her pride in being the first American of Dominican descent to receive an Academy Award, stating, “I am a proud child of immigrant parents…and I know I won’t be the last.”
Saldaña remarked on the significance of receiving an award for a role where she could sing and speak in Spanish, noting how her grandmother would have been thrilled.
This moment shines a spotlight on Dominican talent in the global arena, further solidifying the nation’s rich cultural heritage.
