Zoë Saldaña is experiencing a wave of excitement and gratitude after receiving her first Golden Globe nomination. The 46-year-old actress shared with reporters that she spoke with family members, including her husband Marco Perego and her mother Asalia Nazario, after learning of the honor for her role as Rita in the film Emilia Pérez.
Saldaña expressed her feelings, saying, “It feels really overwhelming and beautiful. I didn’t know how much I wanted it until I received the nomination. I’m truly blown away and full of gratitude. It’s rewarding to be acknowledged for your hard work in something you care deeply about.”
The nominations were announced recently, with Emilia Pérez leading the pack in film categories, garnering ten nominations. This includes recognition for best supporting actress in a musical or comedy for Saldaña, as well as nominations for best motion picture, best director, and several others, showcasing the film’s impressive talent.
Currently in Paris, Saldaña shared that upon receiving the news, she immediately reached out to her family. “I woke my mom up,” she recalled with laughter. “My husband was awake, so I connected with him first. My entire team in L.A. and New York were also there, cheering for me and the film. I was just surrounded by love and support.”
Saldaña and Perego, who got married in a small ceremony years ago, are parents to three sons: twins Cy and Bowie, and their younger son Zen. She took a moment to congratulate her fellow nominees, including Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón, expressing her pride in their accomplishments.
What truly resonates with Saldaña about this nomination is the opportunity to represent someone that many people can relate to. “It’s very special to show that a girl from Queens, New York can achieve great things,” she said. “It sends a message that anyone can reach for the stars.”
Emilia Pérez is currently available for streaming on Netflix and follows the story of Rita, a high-powered lawyer who helps a Mexican cartel leader (played by Gascón) to fake their death and transition into a woman.
As the excitement builds for the 82nd Golden Globes, which will be broadcast live on January 5, Saldaña reflects on the strong bond she formed with her cast during filming, filled with mutual respect and happiness. The energy and enthusiasm they shared reflected their commitment to the project, celebrating the unique storytelling brought to life by director Jacques Audiard.
