Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has raised serious concerns about the sincerity of Russia’s declared Easter ceasefire. Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a temporary truce, Zelenskyy pointed out that attacks continued, undermining any notion of a genuine cessation of hostilities.
On Easter morning, Zelenskyy shared on social media that while the Russian military seemed to be trying to project a facade of peace, they were still making efforts to advance positions and inflict damage on Ukrainian forces. He highlighted that Ukrainian troops had recorded numerous incidents of shelling and attacks along the front lines, indicating that the conflict was far from over.
Zelenskyy noted that despite Ukraine’s attempts to respond appropriately to Russian actions, there was a troubling rise in the use of heavy weaponry by Russian forces. He also mentioned the lack of air raid sirens, which he considered a small relief amid the ongoing violence.
The situation escalated further when some Ukrainian soldiers were reportedly killed in a Russian ambush in the Donetsk region. In response, Zelenskyy vowed that those responsible for the attacks would face consequences.
On their part, Russian officials accused Ukraine of conducting drone strikes in the Donetsk area despite the ceasefire, claiming civilian casualties but providing minimal details. They insisted that Russian forces had adhered to the truce.
Zelenskyy has emphasized the need for Russia to fully comply with ceasefire conditions and proposed a 30-day extension of the truce, which the Ukrainian Foreign Minister indicated had not yet received a response from Moscow.
In a pointed remark, Zelenskyy suggested that either Putin lacks control over his military, or it signals Moscow’s unwillingness to pursue a real peace effort, instead opting for favorable publicity.
Shortly after announcing the ceasefire, Putin attended an Easter service at a prominent cathedral in Moscow, receiving support from religious leaders aligned with his government. However, questions remain about how the ceasefire would be enforced and whether it would encompass ongoing airstrikes and ground assaults that continue unabated.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump noted that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are becoming critical, emphasizing that both parties seem to be taking the discussions seriously and are not merely playing games.
The conflict in Ukraine remains complex, with ongoing tensions and uncertainty about the future of peaceful resolution.
