Two teenagers in New York have been given sentences for their part in a shooting. This shooting caused the death of a 3-year-old boy and also hurt his sister.
The young boy, named Ramone “Red” Carter, and his 7-year-old sister were shot while they were playing outside in their neighborhood in Buffalo. This happened around 9:30 p.m. on June 21, 2024.
The 3-year-old was quickly taken to a nearby hospital. Sadly, he passed away there because of his injuries. His sister was lucky and survived.
The police caught the two teenagers, who were 14 and 16 years old, not far from where the shooting happened. They were wearing clothes that matched what people said the shooters were wearing.
The people in charge of the case said that the children who were shot were not who the teenagers were trying to hit. The teenagers have now been sentenced for what they did.
Jahaan Taylor, who is now 16, will spend 15 years to life in prison. This is the longest sentence allowed for someone his age.
He was found guilty of several crimes, including second-degree murder and attempted murder, in October 2025.
Elijah Mumford, who is now 17, was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault. However, the assault charge was later taken away. He will spend 15 years in prison and then be watched for five years after he gets out.
Before the shooting, the teenagers went up to a group of boys. One of them started shooting at the group with a gun that was not legal. But instead of hitting the boys, the shots hit the children. The police said that two guns were used, but they only found one of them.
The person in charge of the case, District Attorney Mike Keane, said that Ramone “Red” Carter was an innocent victim. He was hurt by teenagers who had illegal guns.
