A woman from New York City is facing charges after she reportedly abandoned her baby on the doorstep of a local imam’s home in the Bronx.
Delfina Galvez, 26, was arrested on December 30 and is charged with child abandonment, reckless endangerment, and harming a child. This incident occurred on December 29 when a baby girl was found left outside a residence around 6 a.m.
Witnesses reported that the baby was wrapped in blankets inside a tote bag when she was discovered. Surveillance footage showed the woman carrying the bag before reappearing without it.
Residents expressed their shock over the situation. One local, Fatou Sair, questioned how anyone could leave a baby alone in the street.
Mamadou Hafiz Jallow, an imam at a nearby mosque, received a call from a neighbor informing him about the crying baby at his door. He rushed home, brought the baby inside, and immediately called for help. Jallow noted that the child was very cold when he found her, but she was blinking and moving her fingers.
The infant was soon taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where she is reported to be stable and receiving care.
Many in the neighborhood voiced their concerns over the troublingincident, stating it is disturbing for the community. Authorities confirmed that Galvez lives nearby and noted that New York law allows people to safely leave newborns at hospitals, police stations, or firehouses without facing legal consequences.
Jallow expressed hope for the baby’s well-being and for the mother to find forgiveness in her actions.
