Wiz Khalifa Faces Jail Time in Romania for Drug Possession
Bucharest, Romania – American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in jail by a Romanian court for drug possession. The sentencing comes after an incident at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti last July.
According to reports, Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was stopped by Romanian police after allegedly smoking cannabis on stage during the festival. Prosecutors stated that he was found with over 18 grams of cannabis and consumed some of it publicly.
The Constanta Court of Appeal delivered the sentence after convicting Khalifa of “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption.” This decision is final under Romanian law.
A lower court initially issued Khalifa a fine of 3,600 lei ($830) for “illegal possession of dangerous drugs” in April. However, prosecutors appealed, seeking a harsher sentence.
Romania has strict drug laws, criminalizing the possession of cannabis for personal use. Penalties can range from three months to two years in prison, or a fine. It remains uncertain if Romanian authorities will seek extradition, given Khalifa’s U.S. citizenship and residency.
The case has sparked debate about personal responsibility and the impact of drug use, especially in public spaces. Many support the country’s strict laws, arguing that they are essential for maintaining order and protecting communities, particularly the youth, from the harmful effects of drug use. Khalifa rose to fame with his mixtape “Kush + Orange Juice.” Last summer in Romania, the rapper smoked a large cigarette while singing his hit song “Young, Wild & Free.”
