SAINT PAUL, MN – In a tightly contested match, the Detroit Red Wings faced off against the Minnesota Wild at Grand Casino Arena. Despite holding the lead multiple times, the Red Wings ultimately fell to the Wild in a 4-3 overtime defeat.
The Red Wings, playing with a busy schedule and missing a key defenseman, managed to secure a point in the standings. This point pushed them past the Tampa Bay Lightning to the top of the Atlantic Division. They are now tied with the Carolina Hurricanes for the lead in the Eastern Conference.
The game saw quick goals from both sides. Early in the third period, Mats Zuccarello of the Wild scored to tie the game 2-2. Moments later, Detroit’s James van Riemsdyk scored, putting the Red Wings back in the lead. However, Zuccarello quickly responded, tying the game again.
In overtime, Kirill Kaprizov of the Wild scored the game-winning goal, securing the victory for Minnesota.
The Red Wings were without defenseman Simon Edvinsson due to an injury, leading to Travis Hamonic making his first appearance since December.
Detroit started strong, with Lucas Raymond scoring on a power play early in the first period, giving the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.
Red Wings forward Patrick Kane is chasing a milestone. He remains two points behind Mike Modano, a Michigan native, for the most points in an NHL career by a U.S.-born player. Modano was present at the game.
The Wild responded with a power-play goal of their own, with Kirill Kaprizov scoring to tie the game 1-1.
In the second period, Red Wings’ Lucas Raymond scored again, putting Detroit ahead 2-1. The Wild’s goalie went behind the net to play the puck, but Raymond intercepted the puck.
Overall, it was a back-and-forth game with both teams showing offensive strength. The Red Wings will look to bounce back in their next game.
