Liam Williams Announces Retirement from International Rugby
Liam Williams, the well-known Welsh rugby player who plays full-back and has also represented the British and Irish Lions, has announced his retirement from international rugby. At 34 years old, Williams is bringing an end to a remarkable career representing Wales.
During his time playing for Wales, Williams earned 93 caps, which means he played in 93 international games for his country. He also scored 21 tries, showing his ability to score points for his team. He was a part of two Six Nations championship-winning teams, including one that achieved a Grand Slam, meaning they won all their games in the tournament.
Williams also had the honor of being selected for two British and Irish Lions tours. These tours bring together the best players from the United Kingdom and Ireland to compete against strong rugby nations. He played in five Test matches, which are the most important games on the tour, across the 2017 tour to New Zealand and the 2021 tour to South Africa.
Williams’ journey to professional rugby is an inspiring one. He started as an amateur player while working as a scaffolder at a steelworks in Port Talbot. He made his professional debut for the Scarlets in September 2011, and within a year, he was representing Wales on the international stage.
After playing for the Scarlets for seven years, Williams also played for other teams like Saracens and Cardiff. He then joined Newcastle last year, continuing his professional career.
Williams’ last game for Wales was against France in the 2025 Six Nations tournament.
Looking back on his international career, Williams shared his thoughts in a message. He talked about his journey from working as a scaffolder to wearing the Welsh jersey, emphasizing the hard work, sacrifice, and support he received along the way.
He expressed his gratitude to the Welsh fans, his teammates, coaches, and support staff. He also said that representing the British and Irish Lions was an experience he would always cherish. Williams stated that he is retiring from international rugby with no regrets, feeling proud and thankful for the opportunities he had.
Williams will continue his rugby career playing for Newcastle.
