Will Smith is making a significant comeback in the music scene. The actor and rapper recently announced that he will release his first full-length album in two decades titled Based on a True Story. The album is set to drop on March 28, 2024, marking his return since his last album, Lost and Found, which came out in March 2005.
This new album will feature 14 tracks and includes collaborations with well-known artists like DJ Jazzy Jeff, Teyana Taylor, and Jac Ross. DJ Jazzy Jeff has been a long-time collaborator with Smith and played a vital role in helping him achieve fame in music.
In an exciting reveal, Smith shared on Instagram, "It’s OFFICIAL!! My new album Based On A True Story drops March 28. TWO WEEKS!! Hit that presave. Been working on this project for a minute and I’m itchin’ to get it out to y’all."
He had first hinted at this exciting news when he released his new single, "Beautiful Scars," in January, which features rapper Big Sean. The music video, which had a buzz online, showcased Smith channeling Neo, the character he famously turned down in the Matrix films.
Earlier singles that will be included in the album comprise “Work of Art,” featuring his son Jaden Smith and artist Russ, “Tantrum” with Joyner Lucas, and “You Can Make It,” a track that Smith performed at the 2024 BET Awards.
Smith expressed in a recent interview that this project reflects a deeply personal journey for him, stating, "I’ve been in the lab for the last year and a half. This music is without question the most personal and powerful that I’ve ever made."
In conjunction with his album announcement, Smith reunited with his former co-stars from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to participate in a viral dance challenge, further showcasing his enduring connection to the beloved series.
With this new project, Will Smith aims to re-establish his presence in the music world, and fans are eagerly anticipating what he has to share after a long hiatus.
