The White House is set to present plans for a new ballroom to the National Capital Planning Commission this month, according to the commission’s chairman, Will Scharf.
The proposed ballroom, covering 90,000 square feet, will be almost double the size of the White House itself. Former President Trump has stated it will accommodate nearly 1,000 people. The project is estimated to cost $300 million.
Trump has said that the ballroom will be funded by private donations from “generous Patriots, Great American Companies,” and himself, meaning no taxpayer money will be used for the project.
The National Capital Planning Commission reviews construction and major renovations to government buildings in the region. Scharf said the commission’s role will begin once the plans are officially submitted.
