Investigation Launched into El Salvador’s Treatment of Venezuelan Migrants
CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s Attorney General announced on Monday that an investigation has been initiated regarding President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador. The probe focuses on alleged mistreatment and human rights violations against Venezuelan migrants detained in El Salvador.
These migrants had spent several months in a maximum-security prison after being deported from the United States. Attorney General Tarek William Saab stated that the investigation was prompted by complaints from some of these migrants about their treatment. The inquiry will also examine the roles of El Salvador’s Justice Minister, Gustavo Villatoro, and the head of the prison system, Osiris Luna.
Over 250 migrants have been held since March at a facility known as the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT). This prison was originally designed to house individuals accused of gang-related activities, as part of Bukele’s ongoing campaign against crime in the nation.
The migrants were released last Friday in a deal that involved the exchange of 10 American citizens who were incarcerated in Venezuela. This arrangement included participation from three different countries.
As of now, Bukele’s office has not provided a comment regarding the allegations.
