Vice President JD Vance Highlights Importance of Faith at University Event
OXFORD, MS – Vice President JD Vance spoke at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi, emphasizing the vital role of Christian values in America’s future. The event honored Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist, whose work deeply impacted Vance’s own faith journey.
Vance addressed students on various topics, including immigration, the National Guard, and the Second Amendment. Questions frequently touched on his faith and how it shapes his approach to governing.
“I believe Christian values are a crucial foundation for our nation,” Vance stated, responding to a question about the separation of church and state. He expressed concern about those who claim neutrality, suggesting they often have hidden agendas. Vance was clear about his belief in the positive influence of Christianity on the country.
He also cautioned against a “perverted version of Christianity” that can arise from contemporary liberalism. While acknowledging the importance of helping those who are disenfranchised, Vance argued that separating compassion from religious duty and civic virtue could lead to lawlessness. He emphasized the need for both compassion and justice, asserting that a strong Christian moral order is essential for the country’s future.
Vance challenged the idea that the Constitution requires removing God from public life. He believes the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the Establishment Clause, which led to the removal of religion from many public spaces, was a “terrible mistake” with ongoing negative consequences.
When asked about raising his family in an interfaith household, as his wife is Hindu, Vance highlighted open communication and mutual respect. He shared that while he hopes his wife will one day share his Christian faith, he respects her free will.
Vance also spoke about Charlie Kirk’s influence on his faith, noting that Kirk encouraged him to be more open about his beliefs. Vance explained that his faith motivates him to be a better husband and father, and to serve God and country to the best of his ability.
