A woman in Utah has been given a long prison sentence for killing her parents.
Mia Bailey will spend many years in prison for the deaths of her mother and father, Joseph and Gail Bailey. On December 19, she learned she would serve two back-to-back sentences of 25 years to life for each murder. She also received up to five years for another charge.
Bailey, who is 30 years old, broke into her parents’ home in Washington City on June 18, 2024. She shot her 70-year-old father twice in the head and her 69-year-old mother four times. After that, she shot at her brother’s room, where he was hiding with his wife. Police say she didn’t care if she hurt her brother.
Police arrested Bailey on June 19, 2024. She was charged with several serious crimes, including killing her parents and trying to kill her brother.
In court, Bailey admitted she was guilty of killing her parents. She said she did it on purpose.
Her lawyer asked the judge to let her serve the sentences at the same time instead of one after the other. He said she had no criminal record before and has mental health problems. He claimed she has the mind of a young child because of her conditions, which include autism, psychosis, schizophrenia, ADHD, and OCD. She may also have bipolar disorder.
Bailey’s brother, Dustin, also spoke about her mental health in court. He believes her actions were caused by hormones and other drugs she was given during her transgender treatment. He said that giving strong hormones to someone with mental health issues without proper care is not helpful and can be dangerous.
Bailey said she was very sorry to her family for what she did and that she couldn’t live with herself.
The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole will make the final decision about how long Bailey will stay in prison.
