Luigi Mangione, who has been identified as the suspect in the deadly shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has secured the legal services of well-known attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo. This move comes as Mangione faces serious charges, including murder, in connection with the shooting that occurred on December 4.
A representative from Agnifilo’s law firm confirmed that she will be representing the 26-year-old Mangione in New York. Agnifilo, who has extensive experience in criminal law and served as the chief assistant district attorney in Manhattan for several years, will not be making any public comments about the case for now.
Before joining private practice and during her tenure with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Agnifilo worked as general counsel for criminal justice policy under Mayor Mike Bloomberg from 2006 to 2010. A seasoned New York prosecutor has praised Agnifilo’s familiarity with the courts, stating she knows all the key players in the system.
Reports from various media outlets indicate a connection between Friedman Agnifilo and another high-profile legal case involving Sean “Diddy” Combs. Agnifilo is married to Marc Agnifilio, who is representing Combs in his own legal troubles related to serious charges such as sex trafficking and racketeering. Combs is currently awaiting trial and remains in custody.
Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a manhunt that lasted several days. He is alleged to have shot Thompson outside the New York Hilton Midtown, then fled the scene on a bicycle. Authorities have reported that he was found in possession of an unregistered firearm, a suppressor, counterfeit identification, and a manifesto that allegedly criticizes those working in the health insurance sector.
Currently, Mangione is facing second-degree murder charges in New York, along with additional charges in Pennsylvania related to weapons and forgery.
