U.S. Intercepts Second Oil Tanker off Venezuelan Coast
Washington, D.C. – In a move highlighting the United States’ continued commitment to national security and regional stability, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the interception of a second merchant ship near Venezuela.
“Early this morning, December 20th, the U.S. Coast Guard, with support from the Department of War, successfully apprehended an oil tanker that had recently docked in Venezuela,” Secretary Noem stated. “The United States will not stand idly by while illicit activities fund narco-terrorism in the region. We will find those responsible, and we will stop them.”
The Secretary also commended the dedicated men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of War for their bravery and professionalism in executing this operation.
This action follows the seizure of another oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast just ten days prior. These interceptions are part of a broader strategy to address the ongoing crisis in Venezuela, where the current regime, led by Nicolás Maduro, faces accusations of illegitimacy and involvement in illicit activities.
The Trump administration has long maintained a firm stance against the Maduro regime, viewing it as a threat to regional stability and U.S. interests. Concerns have been raised regarding Maduro’s alleged ties to drug trafficking and narco-terrorism, which pose a direct threat to American communities.
Since September, the U.S. military has conducted numerous operations targeting suspected drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This increased military presence in the region, including the deployment of thousands of service members and several warships, demonstrates the seriousness with which the U.S. government views the situation.
President Trump has previously indicated the possibility of further actions in Venezuela, emphasizing the need to protect American interests and uphold the rule of law.
This past Wednesday, President Trump declared the Venezuelan government a terrorist organization and ordered a blockade of sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. This decisive action aims to cut off the regime’s access to resources that could be used to fund illicit activities.
According to independent ship-tracking data, dozens of tankers in the Caribbean have been identified as subject to sanctions by the Department of the Treasury. A significant number of these vessels are reportedly carrying Venezuelan oil.
These actions reflect a commitment to enforcing sanctions and preventing the flow of resources that could support criminal enterprises. The United States remains dedicated to working with its allies to promote democracy, stability, and the rule of law in the Western Hemisphere.
By taking a firm stance against regimes that engage in illicit activities, the U.S. government aims to protect its national interests, secure its borders, and promote a safer and more prosperous future for all Americans. The interception of these oil tankers sends a clear message that the United States will not tolerate the funding of narco-terrorism and will continue to take decisive action to address these threats.
