Irondale Mayor Draws Criticism for Immigration Stance
Irondale, Alabama – Irondale Mayor James Stewart, Jr. is facing scrutiny after suggesting his policies on immigration are inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. Stewart has pledged city funds to train activists to monitor federal immigration officers.
Senator Tommy Tuberville, also a candidate for Alabama governor, has voiced strong opposition to the mayor’s actions. Tuberville stated that as governor, he would ensure Alabama has a “zero-tolerance policy” for local leaders who attempt to bypass federal law. He emphasized that federal law mandates the deportation of illegal immigrants and suggested that mayors who disagree should seek to change the law by running for Congress.
Stewart’s office has stated that Irondale is not a sanctuary city and that they will not harbor criminals. However, concerns remain about the mayor’s commitment to cooperating with federal immigration enforcement.
Governor Kay Ivey has affirmed that Alabama will continue to work with federal agencies to enforce immigration laws and protect its citizens.
