Scott Turner, a former NFL player and Texas lawmaker, has successfully passed a significant hurdle in the Senate, paving the way for a confirmation vote this week to become the next Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The procedural vote concluded with a 55-45 outcome, supported by two Democrats alongside the Republican majority.
Turner was announced by President Donald Trump as his pick for HUD shortly after the November election last year. His nomination highlights a conservative approach to housing and urban development, emphasizing policies that encourage self-sufficiency and economic growth.
Before his nomination, Turner served at the forefront of Trump’s first administration as the Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council. During his time in this role, he worked alongside former HUD Secretary Ben Carson, promoting initiatives that helped distressed communities improve their economic prospects. Trump praised Turner’s contributions, noting that over $50 billion in private investment flowed into Opportunity Zones under his leadership.
Turner played nine seasons in the NFL, predominantly as a defensive back for the Washington Redskins, the San Diego Chargers, and the Denver Broncos, before transitioning into a political career. After leaving football, he dedicated several years to public service in Texas, focusing on policies that uplift local communities.
During his recent Senate hearing, Turner expressed his commitment to reforming ineffective policies and guiding people away from dependency on government assistance. His aim is to empower individuals to achieve their goals and embrace the opportunities that the American dream offers. Turner’s vision for HUD aligns with conservative principles, seeking to reduce government intervention while fostering an environment where citizens can thrive independently.
