President Trump to Celebrate Navy Anniversary Amidst Government Shutdown
WASHINGTON – President Trump will attend the Navy’s 250th-anniversary celebration in Norfolk, Virginia, on Sunday, despite the ongoing government shutdown.
“I believe, ‘THE SHOW MUST GO ON!'” Trump stated on Truth Social. “This will be the largest Celebration in the History of the Navy. Thousands of our brave Active Duty Servicemembers and Military Families will be in attendance, and I look forward to this special day with all of them.”
The shutdown, which began Wednesday, has led to partisan disagreements, with military personnel working without pay and some federal employees furloughed.
Trump has accused Democrats of enabling the shutdown and attempting to disrupt the Navy’s celebration. He noted the importance of honoring our military, despite the current political climate.
Senate Democrats previously rejected measures to continue government operations, citing concerns about healthcare subsidies and Medicaid cuts.
Alongside the President, First Lady Melania Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Navy Secretary John Phelan are scheduled to attend the event at Naval Station Norfolk.
Previously, Trump addressed military leaders, emphasizing the need for a strong military. Hegseth has also taken steps to eliminate “woke” culture within the military, focusing on traditional standards.
The administration aims to ensure the military remains focused on its core mission: protecting American interests and values, both at home and abroad.
