Mayor of Nogales Supports President Trump’s Immigration Strategy
In the sun-soaked city of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, Mayor Juan Francisco Gim Nogales is voicing strong approval for President Donald Trump’s approach to immigration policy. The mayor believes that the U.S. is taking the right steps to manage immigration by enforcing stricter regulations.
He stated, "The U.S. is effectively cleaning house regarding immigration," suggesting that a more controlled process will eventually lead to better recruitment aligned with new rules. This sentiment echoes Trump’s strategy to alter traditional methods of deportation. Rather than simply sending migrants back across the border, Trump’s administration is using a more strategic method that involves relocating them further away.
"In the past, we would see deportees returning almost immediately," the mayor said. "Trump’s approach is breaking that cycle, and I see that as a positive change that benefits both economies."
When asked how Trump’s policies differ from those of previous administrations, Gim emphasized that the current strategy helps address repeat offenders more effectively. He noted, “If you deport someone, many of them attempt to cross again. But with the new measures in place, we’re seeing a significant reduction in those numbers.”
He also discussed preparations made in Nogales to handle potential mass deportations, stating that the city had set up infrastructure to expect 2,000 to 3,000 migrants daily; however, the actual numbers have been far less, averaging around 60.
Furthermore, Mayor Gim highlighted the importance of collaboration between Nogales and U.S. authorities, including Customs and Border Protection. These partnerships aim to ensure a smooth transition for deportees returning to Mexico. "We hold monthly meetings to coordinate efforts," he explained. "This helps us provide proper shelter for those affected."
The mayor concluded by stressing the need for cooperation between neighboring countries, viewing challenges in immigration as opportunities for improvements. He emphasized that both nations must work together to create safer and more efficient processes along the border.
