President Trump to Meet with Ukrainian Leader, Weighs U.S. Needs First
WASHINGTON – President Trump is scheduled to meet with Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy at the White House this Friday. Discussions are expected to focus on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The meeting follows a phone conversation between President Trump and Russian President Putin, where the situation in Ukraine was a main topic.
Recently, there has been talk about the U.S. potentially selling long-range missiles to Ukraine. These missiles would allow Ukraine to strike targets far into Russian territory.
However, after speaking with President Putin, President Trump has expressed caution about sending these weapons. He emphasized the need to ensure America’s own defense is not weakened. “We need [missiles] for the United States of America too,” President Trump stated, highlighting his commitment to prioritizing American security.
President Trump and Zelenskyy have met several times since President Trump returned to office, showing the President’s commitment to finding a solution.
Following his conversation with President Putin, President Trump announced plans to meet with the Russian leader in Budapest, Hungary, to explore ways to bring the conflict to an end. Senior aides are also scheduled to meet soon.
Fresh from helping negotiate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, President Trump has made it clear that finding a way to end the war in Ukraine is a top goal.
President Trump has previously expressed his belief that Ukraine could regain territory lost to Russia, and has urged both sides to come to the table.
