White House Plans New Nominee for U.S. Attorney in D.C.
The White House is preparing to announce a new nominee for the position of U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, following challenges to the selection made during the Trump administration.
Previously, President Trump nominated Ed Martin, a former defense attorney known for representing individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol event. Martin has been serving as the interim U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., since January.
However, his confirmation has stalled in the Senate due to concerns raised by some lawmakers. Republican Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina, who is part of the Senate Judiciary Committee, expressed that he would not support Martin’s nomination. Additionally, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, the leading Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, also voiced opposition, citing concerns over inaccuracies in statements made by Martin to the committee.
On Thursday, President Trump indicated that he would propose a different candidate who may garner more support. He remarked, "He wasn’t getting the support from people that I thought… Crime is down 25% in D.C. during this time. We have someone else who will be announced in the next couple of days."
Trump also shared his disappointment regarding the situation, stating, "A lot of people were disappointed. But that’s the way it works. Sometimes things don’t go as planned."
The White House has yet to provide further comments.
