Trump Calls for Resignation of Fed Governor Amid Allegations
In a bold move, former President Donald Trump is urging Lisa Cook, a Federal Reserve governor, to resign following accusations of mortgage fraud. This development marks a continuing effort by Trump’s team to exert influence over the central bank.
Bill Pulte, head of the agency overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, has called on the Justice Department to investigate Cook. She was appointed to the Fed by President Joe Biden in 2022 and secured a lengthy term extending to 2038.
Pulte’s letter alleges that Cook misrepresented two homes as her primary residences in 2021 to obtain more favorable mortgage rates. He claims she purchased a house in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a condo in Atlanta just weeks apart. Historically, properties deemed as primary residences carry lower mortgage rates compared to rental properties.
The Federal Reserve and the Justice Department have not commented on these allegations, which add another layer to Trump’s criticisms of the central bank. He has consistently called for lower interest rates, arguing they would alleviate pressure on the national debt and invigorate the housing market.
If Cook were to resign, Trump could nominate a replacement more aligned with his views on interest rates. The president’s administration has faced significant challenges in its economic policies, with various Democrats, including Senators Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren, defending Cook against Trump’s calls for her resignation.
These events highlight a significant political tension surrounding the Federal Reserve, historically regarded as independent from political influence. As Trump aims to shape its agenda, the ongoing dialogue about rates and economic management continues to unfold.
