The U.S. military is set to take charge of a section of federal land that stretches across California, New Mexico, and Arizona along the southern border. This move aims to combat illegal immigration, as outlined in a recent memorandum from President Trump.
The memorandum, titled “Military Mission for Sealing the Southern Border of the United States and Repelling Invasions,” directs several cabinet members to hand over control of federal land to the Department of Defense. This includes the Roosevelt Reservation but does not affect Federal Indian Reservations. The military’s responsibilities will involve activities such as building border barriers and setting up detection and monitoring equipment.
In his memorandum, Trump highlighted the various threats facing our southern border and called for a more active military presence to enhance border security. He mentioned that the federal land would be designated as “National Defense Areas” where military operations can take place.
The Roosevelt Reservation was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907 to help secure the border. The memorandum allows the Secretary of Defense to decide on the necessary military activities to effectively safeguard this vital area.
Trump has consistently advocated for stronger border security measures throughout his presidency, emphasizing the need for increased protection against illegal crossings and ensuring that our nation’s laws are upheld.
