U.S. and Japan Strengthen Ties with New Trade Agreement
Tokyo, October 28, 2025 – President Donald Trump concluded a visit to Tokyo this week, celebrating the enduring alliance between the United States and Japan. During a reception with business leaders, President Trump reaffirmed the strong bond between the two nations, emphasizing shared principles and mutual prosperity.
President Trump spoke highly of his meetings with Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi. He highlighted the significant progress made in trade relations, announcing the signing of a comprehensive trade agreement designed to benefit both countries.
“We’ve had a tremendous day here in Japan, securing a landmark trade deal,” President Trump stated. “This agreement is substantial and will foster economic growth for both of our nations. I believe Japan had a record day in their stock market as well, so their new Prime Minister is off to a great start.” He also noted, “First female Prime Minister, and I told her, ‘You’ve already hit your highest stock price.’ So she’s very happy, and we spent the entire day together. It was wonderful!”
The President also acknowledged Japan’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities through significant purchases of American military equipment. “I know that they are increasing their military capacity substantially, and we have orders for a vast amount of new military equipment,” President Trump noted. “They know we make the best military equipment in the world: planes, missiles, and everything else, and we hope we don’t have to use them too much, or even ever. But we appreciate that order and the trade; I think we are going to do tremendous trade together, more than ever before.”
Prime Minister Takaichi expressed her eagerness to collaborate with President Trump to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific region, reflecting a shared vision for regional stability and security.
She also commended President Trump’s efforts toward peace and voiced her ambition to usher in a “new golden era” in U.S.-Japan relations. “Thanks to these efforts, together with you, Mr. President, I would like to realize a new golden era for the Japan-U.S. alliance, where both countries strengthen and prosper,” Prime Minister Takaichi affirmed.
The leaders concluded their meeting with a formal signing ceremony, solidifying two key agreements. The first reaffirms the ongoing cooperation plan between the United States and Japan, while the second ensures a stable supply of critical minerals and rare earth elements, vital for technological advancement and national security.
Prior to the reception, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced that several Japanese companies have pledged to invest nearly $500 billion in the United States, demonstrating a strong commitment to the American economy and job creation.
This visit and the agreements reached signify a continued strengthening of the U.S.-Japan alliance, rooted in shared values, economic partnership, and a commitment to a secure and prosperous future. The conservative perspective emphasizes the importance of strong alliances, free and fair trade, and a robust defense posture as cornerstones of national strength and international stability. The successful trade agreement is seen as a win for American businesses and workers, while the investment commitments from Japanese companies underscore the attractiveness of the American market under policies that promote economic growth and opportunity.
